Dr. Jennifer Walden Returns To Her Texas Roots

Published / by Crossfit / 1 Comment on Dr. Jennifer Walden Returns To Her Texas Roots

Dr. Jennifer Walden says its good to be home again. The highly-successful plastic surgeon and mother of twin boys, opted to leave the big city and return to her Texas roots. Although it wasn’t easy leaving behind a thriving Manhattan practice, it was the best move to make after becoming a single parent.

Walden was listed in Harper’s Bazaar as one of the top 24 plastic surgeons in the U.S. Aside from beautifying the masses, Walden is also a local television personality, author and one of the only female board directors of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Her mother was a surgical nurse and her father was as dentist. After graduating from high school, she graduated from the University of Texas and went on to the school’s medical school. Although the industry traditionally has only a few women, Walden was determined to prove that she could be just as successful as any male in the field.

Dr. Walden credits her parents for instilling the value of education. All of her siblings are also highly successful professionals.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Walden did her post residency externship at the highly-renowned Manhattan Eye, Nose and Throat Clinic. Under the tutelage of her mentor Dr. Sherill Alston, Dr. Walden became a highly-skilled surgeon.

Dr. Walden’s new plastic surgery center has grown way beyond her expectations. She specializes in breast augmentations and facial surgeries.  “Doing things to change problem areas of your body will help you raise your self-esteem.”

Dr. Jennifer Walden says starting over was tough, but necessary. “You have to work hard for what you want, and I’m a doer.” She says she wants other young women to follow in her footsteps. “You have to be organized and have you priorities in order.” Having a good support system is a must.

How To Make Non-Dairy Cheese: A Recipe by Markus Rothkranz

Published / by Crossfit / 1 Comment on How To Make Non-Dairy Cheese: A Recipe by Markus Rothkranz

Cheese is possibly one of the most beloved foods in the world and for those on a vegan and vegetarian diet they may be a bit forlorn that they can no longer enjoy their friend cheese. However, one doesn’t have to end their relationship with cheese and they can enjoy it on salads, tofu burgers, or all by itself. Cara Brotman shows us how to make non-dairy cheese and the best part is it’s home made so you know where it’s coming from, all the ingredients, and most importantly no animals will be harmed when making it.

Cara starts off by telling us the cheese is made with almonds and Irish moss in a blender, then she adds a little water, truffle oil, chives, sea salt, pepper, and nutritional yeast. Cara molds or shapes the cheese then leaves it in the refrigerator for a bit until it’s hard enough to slice. Cara says that a good comparison of the cheese would be a cross between mozzarella and feta. Cara can’t help but take a bite and tells us that it tastes so good and that’s it’s so good for you. She tells us that you can add celery, red onions, or even olive oil instead of truffle oil but the main ingredients are Irish moss and peeled almonds mixed together in the blender.

You can even skip leaving it in the refrigerator for a long time and use it as a spread, or a dip, maybe even a salad dressing.

The hiring of 48-year-old executive Phil Dolci is a strategic move for Dick DeVos and family. Stow Company, which is one of the subsidiaries of Windquest group of companies, needed a strategic boost after the retirement of their CEO. Dolci is a Kellogg trained executive with over 20 years of progressive management experience. He takes over from the retiring Frank Newman.

Betsy DeVos and her Husband Dick DeVos are keen on social change. Due to their interests, they seek solutions to various problems. The two are also in business. The Windquest Group in which Betsy is the chairperson mostly deals with clean energy and technology. Dick was the president of the Orlando Magic NBA franchise and Amway. Dick and Betsy DeVos are also philanthropists. Betsy chairs the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She also takes part in the activities of many other charity organizations. These include Mars Hill Bible Church and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center.

Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation as a way to give back to society. They have been married for nearly 30 years and have four children. The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation focuses on justice, leadership, education, arts and the general community. Through this foundation, they have taken part in many charities. They are both passionate about being agents of change in society. I think their approach is good because it is not selfish. It is also likely to have a long-term impact on the whole community.

Dick DeVos was born in Michigan. He is a businessman and an entrepreneur. After graduating from the Forest Hills public school, he joined Amway which is a business belonging to his family. I think his involvement in the family business since he was young helped in making him a better businessman and entrepreneur. He graduated from Northwood University with an undergraduate degree in business administration.  He has several honorary doctorates from various universities. The Northwood University also gave him alumni recognition.

Dick DeVos also holds several executive positions in various companies and institutions. Some of these are the Grand Action, the RDV Corporation, Thunderbird School of Global Management and the West Michigan Aviation Academy.

Nathaniel Ru: Sweetgreen Success

Published / by Crossfit / 1 Comment on Nathaniel Ru: Sweetgreen Success

As a Georgetown undergraduate, Nathaniel Ru and three other close friends, wanted a little more out of life. Being fed up with the choices of college foods, they developed a plan and founded one of the greatest salad chains on the market today. Eight years later, after their graduation, Nathaniel Ru and his colleagues, started one of the hippest and up-beat salad chains. Their salad chain was created to bring a fresh alternative to other salad markets, by providing a farm-to-salad atmosphere. Nathaniel Ru’s salad chain is called Sweetgreen. Sweetgreen started in 2007 and was funded by the help of 40 friends and relatives.

Today, Sweetgreen is in 31 nationwide areas, and hoping to reach to 40 by the end of the year. Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman, and Nathaniel Ru, are all founders of Sweetgreen and they all three come from families of entrepreneurs. While coming from business families, they all had a vision of building a business on their own, but also wanting healthier food choices in Georgetown.

The vision of Sweetgreen came from the three friends being disciplined. Nathaniel Ru and his colleagues knew that they did not want to just produce a regular type of salad, but wanted something more for healthier options. Nathaniel Ru, along with the other founders, has stated, “We knew that we weren’t selling just a salad leaf, We’re selling a set of values that are about doing everything right, sustainable, and I mean that in the business, in the food that we serve, in the way we hire and treat people in our stores, in our community, on the farms we work with, in the way we build our stores.”

Sweetgreen has completed three rounds of venture capital funding, totaling $95 million. It has gained so many great reviews, along with community and local support. People are finding, that it is not just a salad or a piece of lettuce, there is taste and values behind each bite, and because of the farm-fresh taste, the salad is considered more as a meal at Sweetgreen. Nathaniel Ru, as a college student, definitely had dreams and aspirations of a business chain. As graduation got closer, he knew that deep down, he didn’t want that life.
