Dr. Avi Weisfogel ran his own dental practice for more than 15 years in New Jersey. He became interested in sleep disorders during this time and started exploring ways that dentists and physicians could treat patients with the problem. He is now the owner of Dental Sleep Masters Seminars, also in New Jersey. In 2012 he started Owner Unlimited Sleep Patient to help other dentists learn about improving a patient’s sleep by using oral devices to treat patients. Dr. Weisfogel has a deep interest in sleep apnea, and uses his knowledge to help other dentists identify patients who could benefit from treatment.
Dr. Avi Weisfogel explains that, although sleep apnea can affect people of any age, the risk of suffering from it increases with age. Excess weight is another factor that increases the chances of suffering from the condition. He claims that nearly 50 percent of the patients with it, have weight problems. This could be due to the extra weight pushing on the airway.
When a woman’s neck is larger than 16 inches around and a man’s is larger than 17 inches, it increases the chances of obstructed breathing during sleep. If a person has a narrowed airway due to genetics, enlarged tonsils or nasal congestion the risk of sleep apnea increases.
People who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, or have smoked for many years are also at a higher risk of the condition. Children do not usually suffer from sleep apnea, however, those with enlarged tonsils and those who are overweight may experience the condition.
Sleep apnea has been associated with chronic heart failure, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, stroke, depression and anxiety, car accidents and injuries while on the job. Most people are never even diagnosed with the condition.
The Dental Sleep Masters Seminar provides education and clinical support to help doctors and dentist to add the treatment to their practices. The program offers an expanded business model and coaching to ensure a successful implementation.
